New Standards Proposed for Washing Machine Component Recycling

Environmental agencies have introduced draft regulations aimed at improving the reuse of washing machine parts. The proposal focuses on electric motors, drums, and electronic displays, which currently make up a significant portion of e-waste from discarded appliances. Under the new framework, manufacturers would be required to design components for easier disassembly.

Recycling centers report that many washing machine parts, such as balance rings and timer knobs, are often discarded despite being reusable. The proposed rules also include labeling standards for plastic types and metal content. Pilot programs in several cities have shown that recovering components like drive pulleys and thermistors can reduce landfill waste by nearly 30 percent.

Public feedback on the regulations is being collected until the end of the quarter. If approved, the standards would take effect next year, affecting both production and end-of-life processing for household washing machines.
